LESS UPSET IN BRITAIN....

So , I reread and reread the well known and often skipped over words in Matthew 9 about this harvest . I saw with somewhat hardened eyes something entirely different from what Jesus had seen with His selfless eyes . I was a little angry and dismissive; He was heart broken and open . I saw the effect of the crowd`s emptiness , He saw the reason for it. I felt , with no justification , slightly superior ; He felt , although He was completely 'superior' , nothing but serving and saving compassion . Conclusion : I need help , His help ! Anybody out there , wanting to agree with me ?

Jesus had been teaching in their meeting places , reporting Kingdom news , healing diseased bodies and healing bruised and broken lives . The gathering crowd broke His heart . He tells us the reason for their despair and shallowness of life . They are : aimless, hopeless, confused and leaderless . Being 'leaderless' is probably the biggest cause of the others . It`s a description of our culture`s condition today . Children are unfathered , churches are pampered , politicians obfuscate , movements wither by
management ; but the weekend is looking good .

These are exactly the conditions that Jesus describes as a 'huge harvest!'
If we can find some aim , some hope , some clarity and some leaders with the greatest requisite of being hard workers , we can reap it and God can have HIS family back . What to do when there are 'so few workers?'

"On your knees and pray for harvest hands!" Those are not my words....

UPSET IN BRITAIN ..

Mo and I were in UK a few days ago . The weather was awful , incessant rain and a high of 52 degrees ! We were bumped and jostled by rude people . Credit card used fraudulently 4 times . The Yorkshire Dales were sublime but I found myself barely tolerating some of the people . So many seemed miserable and empty .

There were great searchings of heart among dear Anglicans , with Archbishops and Bishops trying to decide what sin is and how important Scripture is . The Chancellor ( Secretary of Treasury) admitted that the people are 'squeezed to the limit' by taxes - they are !- and all in all , I felt the despair. But I also felt anger and resentment .

After a couple of days of this , I began to feel the Love of God seeping into my hardness and judgments . Thank God ! God really likes people ,as well as loving them , and to be honest , mostly I do too . I was shocked at my reaction . The response to 'the seeping love' was to repent . I did . And my mind and heart turned to Matthew 9 .

This is a part of what it says : 'When He ( Jesus) looked our over the crowds, His heart broke . So confused and aimless they were , like sheep without a shepherd . "What a huge harvest!" He said to His disciples.....'

TRAVELING - WORLD RACE UPDATE

Mo and I were at Chad and Erin's excellent wedding celebration over the weekend, and now we're off to England for my mother-in-law's 90th birthday and some meetings. In the meantime, here is an update on the World Race.

The last two months have truly been the exploration of making missions a lifestyle for our two squads currently out in the field. Here is a report for each squad (click the links to read featured blogs and stories):

The September 2007 squad has been in Central America in locations from Panama to Costa Rica and through Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala.

They are doing everything from reaching out to orphans to church planting to prayer walking. The men of "D" Squad went to Guatemala to explore new ministry up on Lake Atitlan. The squad is preparing for their final few weeks of ministry which will culminate in Granada, Nicaragua where they will undergo their final debrief and return home.

The January 2008 squad has been all over southern Africa working with orphans, showing the Jesus Film to crowds of people and watching many get saved and even healed. Teams are currently in Nsoko, Swaziland; Cape Town, South Africa; Blantyre, Malawi; Muturara, Mozambique and have even explored ministry in Namibia, Zambia and Botswana. As they continue their last month in Africa, God is preparing the way for their transition next to India and other areas in Asia.

A brand new squad of 33 individuals (including three married couples) are gearing up June 29th to begin their journey around the globe! They will convene in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and get on a plane bound for southern Mexico. They will join together with coaches and trainers to be equipped for their journey and serve in ministries in and around Palenque, Mexico. It will only be a short while before they head further south into Central America and on to Asia!

GOD WITH SKIN ON

Here's a blog from my friend Seth Barnes:

Africa - land of religious fervor and conflict. In places like the Sudan, the Muslims don't just want to kick out the Christians, they want to kill them. They don't deal well with ambiguity. As Blaise Pascal said, "Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction."

One of the things that the Muslims struggle most with is the Christian understanding of the Trinity. Islam is a black and white religion - it gives comfort to those who want to know what they need to DO to please God. Here - do these five things and you will please Allah.

Actually, it reminds you of the Old Testament. With the advent of Christ, things got complicated. He's fully man and fully God - what is that about? He's Jesus, son of man, and Christ, son of God - how do you reconcile that?

Andrew Shearman does his best to unpackage this mystery in our conversation, a snippet of which I've excerpted below.

PULPITS...

While preaching this weekend , I was reminded of the great quote from Alexis de Tocqueville , French aristocrat as he explored what made America great, over 200 hundred years ago . Here`s a summary :

" I sought for the key to the greatness and genius of America in her commodious harbors , and it was not there ; in her fertile fields and boundless forests , and it was not there ; in her rich mines and vast world commerce , and it was not there ; in her public school system and institutions of learning , and it was not there . I sought for it in her democratic Congress and her matchless Constitution , and it was not there . Not until I went in to the churches of America and heard her pulpits flame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power .

America is great because she is good , and if she ever ceases to be good , America will cease to be great ."

Just a question then : If you went to church in the last 7 days , what did you hear ?? Wherever you live in the world , what did you hear from your pulpit ?

CUT TO THE CHASE.....

Talking with my friend Lee Lamury today here in Cajun Country , he gave me a different perspective on a well known incident in the ministry of Jesus . A rich guy`s interruption ! Jesus is interacting with children and teaching the crowd when he is interrupted by a young rich man . A young man in a hurry , used to dealing with the bottom line . He wants to know what good thing he has to do to get eternal life . Jesus is in the middle of His teaching and demonstrating just how that is possible . The young man wants to know now and snappy .

Jesus gives him a straight answer . 'Don`t murder , don`t commit adultery , don`t steal , don`t lie , honor your father and mother and love your neighbor as yourself .' ' Yeah , yeah , got it , I`ve done all that . What else ??'
It is quite possible that Jesus thought to himself : ' You want to know , and you really want to know now .' Looking the young man right in the eye , and liking him , Jesus said : 'So you want the bottom line , no sugar coating . Give everything away and follow me now . You want now ? Follow me now !'

At the end of the day , The Lord will teach you line upon line ( He knows your pace) or if you want to know now , it is for sure that you will be told the same bottom line . 'I`m worth everything , if you want to be ME and be a disciple, I have to be first and you have to let go a whole bunch of THINGS you`re holding on to .' You just have to decide whether He`s worth it or your stuff...

A GREAT RETURN ON YOUR INVESTMENT..

We`ve been looking at John Baptist breaking the silence when he prophesied and bravely confronted massive religious inertia and status quo . It is ever the same . Left to ourselves , we construct all kinds of forms and norms and club awareness , when what we should be looking for is living encounter with the Word become flesh . John B showed up , spoke up and eventually gave it all up for his testimony . People who consider Christianity a soft option for emotional weak and dependent people , really need to collide with reality .

When John had thrown his momentous verbal punches he concluded the episode with a monumental promise : 'There`s One coming after me...' What a wonderful return for a few well chosen and spoken words . He made his investment - his life - and then there is the promise of THE ONE coming after him . Paul tells us later :
'I believe , therefore have I spoken'. Such believing and speaking , brings the divine promise of fulfillment , Presence and back up ! ' There`s ONE coming after you.' He will come , He will back you up , you will be assured of His Presence .

If you have been faithful , dogged even , in your declarations of faith and change , today His promise for you is : 'There`s ONE coming after me..'
He`ll chase you down and He`ll back you up !
